New central heating systems, additional radiators, power flushing, smart thermostats and underfloor heating โ Torrent Plumbing designs and installs heating solutions for homes across Greater Manchester.
A heating system that's inefficient, poorly balanced or hasn't been properly maintained will cost you more to run and heat your home less effectively. Whether you're replacing an ageing system, extending into a new room, or looking to get more out of what you already have, the right approach can make a real difference to your comfort and your energy bills.
Torrent Plumbing has been installing and upgrading central heating systems across Manchester since 2009. We survey your property, design a system that works for the space, and install it properly โ including balancing the radiators, commissioning the boiler and setting up the controls so the system runs as efficiently as it should.
Planned carefully, installed properly, commissioned so it runs correctly from day one.
We visit the property and assess the space โ room sizes, insulation, existing pipework, the boiler (if staying), and what the system needs to achieve. You'll get a full picture before committing to anything.
We size the radiators correctly for each room (undersized radiators are a common cause of cold spots), plan the pipework routes and advise on controls โ including whether a smart thermostat would suit the setup.
Pipework is run, radiators fitted, the system filled and treated with inhibitor to protect against corrosion. We work cleanly and tidy up as we go โ no pipes left exposed unless agreed.
The system is commissioned โ boiler set up correctly, radiators balanced so each room heats evenly, controls programmed and tested. We walk you through how it all works before we leave.
A central heating system is only as good as its design and installation. Oversized radiators waste money. Undersized ones leave rooms cold. Pipework that isn't properly balanced means some rooms overheat while others struggle to reach temperature. These are the kinds of issues that come from cutting corners at the installation stage โ and they're also why heating systems installed by experienced engineers perform noticeably better than those fitted by whoever was cheapest on the day.
For new heating installations, we start with a heat loss calculation for each room. This tells us the exact output required from each radiator and helps us specify the right boiler size. An oversized boiler short-cycles (fires up and turns off too quickly), which reduces efficiency and leads to more wear on the components. Getting the boiler size right is one of the most important decisions in a new installation, and it requires proper calculation rather than guesswork.
Power flushing is something a lot of people don't know they need until a heating engineer points it out. Over time, the water in a central heating system picks up rust and sludge โ magnetite โ from the inside surfaces of the pipes and radiators. This sludge settles in the bottom of radiators (causing cold spots at the bottom of the radiator while the top is hot), in the boiler heat exchanger (reducing efficiency and causing damage), and in the pump (causing it to work harder and eventually fail). The signs you need a power flush include: cold spots in radiators, the system taking a long time to heat up, noisy pipes or boiler, or the system going through frequent boiler breakdowns. Power flushing involves connecting a machine to the system that circulates a powerful cleaning agent at high velocity, dislodging and removing the sludge before refilling with clean water and corrosion inhibitor. It's a significant improvement for an older system and is typically recommended before fitting a new boiler onto an existing pipework circuit.
Smart thermostats have become a popular upgrade for Manchester homeowners in recent years. Systems like Nest, Hive, and Tado replace the standard programmer and thermostat with a connected device you control from your phone. They can learn your routine, adjust to the weather, and let you manage heating room by room if combined with smart thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs). The energy savings depend on your existing habits โ if you're already controlling your heating carefully, the gains are modest. But if your heating has been running on a fixed schedule without much thought, a smart system can make a noticeable difference. We fit and configure smart thermostats as part of a heating upgrade or as a standalone job.
Underfloor heating (UFH) is another option we install โ both water-based (wet) systems, which are connected to the central heating circuit, and electric systems for smaller areas like bathrooms. Wet UFH is most effective in new builds or major renovations where the floor build-up can be incorporated from the start. It works best with lower system temperatures, which makes it an efficient pairing with a modern condensing boiler or heat pump. We can advise on whether UFH is suitable for your project at the survey stage.
Torrent Plumbing is Gas Safe registered (reg: 000000) and our heating engineers have over 15 years of experience working on domestic and commercial properties across Greater Manchester. We cover Manchester city centre, Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Wigan and all surrounding areas. If you're thinking about a new heating system, an upgrade, or a power flush, get in touch and we'll come out to take a look.
Power flushing is a process that cleans the inside of your central heating system โ pipes, radiators and heat exchanger โ by pushing water and cleaning agent through at high velocity to remove built-up sludge and rust (magnetite). Signs you might need it include cold spots at the bottom of radiators, the system being slow to heat up, noisy pipes, or a boiler that keeps cutting out. If you're fitting a new boiler onto older pipework, most manufacturers recommend power flushing first.
Yes. Adding radiators to an existing system is a relatively common job โ whether you're converting a loft, adding an extension or heating a room that was previously without. We'll check that the existing boiler has sufficient output to handle the additional load and size the new radiator correctly. In some cases, a system upgrade may be worth considering at the same time.
A full new central heating system in a mid-sized property typically takes 3 to 5 days. Adding radiators or carrying out a power flush is usually a 1-day job. We'll give you a clear timeline at the quote stage based on your specific property and what's involved.
It depends on your setup and how you want to control it. For straightforward scheduling, a Hive or Nest system is easy to use and well supported. Tado is particularly good if you want room-by-room control combined with smart TRVs. We'll discuss the options with you when we survey the system โ there's no one-size-fits-all answer, but there's always a good fit for the way you live.
