Fusebox replacement

Consumer unit upgrades in Stockport

An old fusebox is one of the most common electrical hazards in UK homes. We replace outdated units with modern, 18th Edition compliant consumer units that protect your household properly — usually within a day.

Why upgrade your consumer unit?

Your consumer unit — sometimes called a fusebox or distribution board — is the nerve centre of your home's electrical system. Every circuit in the property runs through it. If it's outdated, your home lacks the protection it needs.

Old-style fuseboxes with rewirable fuses or early MCBs don't have RCD (residual current device) protection. RCDs can detect a fault and cut power in 0.04 seconds — fast enough to prevent a fatal electric shock.

Since 2016, UK regulations (18th Edition, BS 7671) require that all new and replacement consumer units in domestic properties use metal enclosures and provide full RCD protection.

Signs your consumer unit needs replacing

You have an old plastic fusebox with rewirable fuses (ceramic fuse carriers)
Breakers trip frequently or won't reset
Your unit has no RCD protection
Your home insurance requires an upgrade
You're adding an EV charger or other high-demand appliance
An EICR report has flagged the unit as needing replacement

What we install

We use 18th Edition compliant metal consumer units from trusted manufacturers. Depending on the size and layout of your property, we'll select the right unit and configure it properly for your circuits.

  • Dual RCD or fully RCBO protected units (each circuit protected individually)
  • Metal enclosure as required by 18th Edition
  • Surge protection device (SPD) where recommended
  • Full circuit testing and labelling before handover
  • BS 7671 Minor Works or full Installation Certificate issued
  • Notification to your local authority via the Part P self-certification scheme

How long does it take?

Most consumer unit replacements are completed in a single day. You'll be without power for a few hours while we do the swap, but we plan the work to minimise inconvenience and let you know exactly what to expect beforehand.
