The Right System for Your Flat Roof

Old felt flat roofs have a bad reputation — and often rightly so. Most lasted 10–15 years at best and started leaking within a few years. Modern flat roofing systems are a completely different story.

EPDM rubber roofing is now the industry standard for good reason. It's flexible, handles temperature extremes well, and when installed properly it can last 50 years. GRP fibreglass is ideal for flat roofs that need to take foot traffic or have complex detailing around edges and drainage.

We survey your flat roof, recommend the right system, and install it properly — with proper drainage, correct falls, and watertight detailing at every edge and upstand. That's what makes a flat roof last.

  • EPDM rubber flat roofing (50-year expected lifespan)

Which System Is Right for You?

We'll advise based on your roof — but here's an overview of the main options we work with.

EPDM Rubber

The modern standard. Single-ply rubber membrane that flexes with temperature changes. Ideal for most extensions, garages, and flat roofed sections of houses.

  • 50+ year expected lifespan
  • Fully seamless installation
  • Handles freeze-thaw cycles
  • Low maintenance

GRP Fibreglass

Rigid fibreglass system that forms a hard, seamless shell. Excellent for roofs with complex shapes, penetrations, or areas that see regular foot traffic.

  • Rock-solid and hard-wearing
  • Seamless — no joints to fail
  • Ideal for foot traffic areas
  • 25-year guarantee available

Torch-on Felt

Modern layered felt systems offer a significant upgrade over old single-layer felt. Budget-friendly, widely used on garages and outbuildings.

  • Lower upfront cost
  • Suitable for garages & outbuildings
  • Fast installation
  • 10–15 year lifespan

Flat Roof Questions Answered

EPDM rubber roofs installed correctly can last 50 years or more. GRP fibreglass roofs are typically guaranteed for 25 years. Modern torch-on felt systems last 10–15 years. The days of flat roofs leaking after 5 years are well and truly gone if you use the right materials and an installer who knows what they're doing.
Not necessarily. If the roof is relatively new and the issue is isolated — a split seam, a failed upstand, a blocked drain — a repair is often enough. If the roof is old, patch repairs tend to create more problems than they solve. We'll be honest with you about which approach makes more sense.
GRP fibreglass roofs are designed to handle foot traffic and are often used for balconies or accessible roofs. EPDM can be walked on carefully for maintenance but isn't designed for regular foot traffic. If you need a walkable roof, tell us and we'll design it accordingly.
