Do you need to do a self-assessment return?
If you're self-employed, a sole trader, a freelancer, a landlord, or you earn more than £100,000 a year, you almost certainly need to complete a self-assessment tax return each year. It's how HMRC collects tax on income that isn't taxed automatically through PAYE.
Many people find self-assessment confusing, time-consuming and stressful — especially the first time. That's where we come in. We handle the whole thing on your behalf, so you can get on with running your business.
What we do for you
When you come to us for self-assessment, here's what we take care of:
- Review all of your income sources for the tax year
- Identify all allowable expenses you can claim
- Prepare your SA100 tax return accurately
- Calculate your exact tax liability
- Submit your return to HMRC digitally, well before the deadline
- Explain your tax bill in plain English so you know what you owe and when
- Set up a payment plan with HMRC if needed
We also flag payments on account — the advance payments HMRC often requires — so you're never caught off guard.
What expenses can you claim?
Depending on what you do for a living, you may be able to claim expenses for things like:
- Home office costs if you work from home
- Business travel and mileage
- Professional subscriptions and training
- Equipment, tools and software
- Marketing and advertising costs
- Accountancy and professional fees
- Use of your own vehicle
Getting your expenses right can make a significant difference to your tax bill. We make sure you claim everything you're entitled to — nothing more, nothing less.
Missed the deadline? We can still help.
If you've missed the 31st January filing deadline, don't panic. The penalties for late filing start at £100, and they increase over time — but the sooner you act, the better. Get in touch and we'll help you get things in order as quickly as possible.
