Our story

Who we are

Ridge Roofing & Building was founded in Sale in 2005 by James Thornton, a roofer who'd spent the previous decade working for larger contractors and grown frustrated with the gap between what was promised and what was delivered.

The idea was simple: build a roofing company where the person who surveys the job is the same person who sees it through — where customers get a straight answer, a fair price, and a clean finish.

Twenty years on, that's still how we operate. We're not the biggest roofing company in Manchester, and we don't try to be. We take on work we can do well, staff we can trust, and we turn up when we say we will.

Our customers are mainly homeowners in Chorlton, Didsbury, Sale, and Altrincham — people who want to know the job's been done properly, without being oversold and without any nasty surprises.

Meet the founder

James Thornton

James has been working on roofs since the mid-1990s. He started out as an apprentice with a Salford-based contractor, and over the following decade worked on everything from small domestic repairs to large commercial re-roofing projects.

In 2005 he set up Ridge Roofing & Building with a focus on residential work in South Manchester — the area he grew up in and knows well.

"I wanted to do work I was proud of," he says. "That means being honest with customers about what they actually need, using decent materials, and not rushing. It sounds obvious, but not everyone does it."

James is on-site for surveys and regularly works alongside the team on jobs. He's an NFRC-registered member and keeps his accreditation current.
