Consumer Unit
Upgrades

Replace your old fuse box with a modern, safe consumer unit. Reduces the risk of electric fire, protects against electric shock, and brings your home up to current wiring regulations.

Why Upgrade Your Consumer Unit?

An old consumer unit — often called a fuse box — is one of the most common electrical hazards in UK homes. Older boards use rewireable fuses rather than modern circuit breakers, and they lack the RCD (Residual Current Device) protection that is now required under BS 7671.

Without RCD protection, a fault on a circuit — a damaged cable, a faulty appliance, a person touching a live wire — may not be detected quickly enough to prevent a serious injury or fire. Modern consumer units have RCDs or RCBOs that cut the power in as little as 40 milliseconds when they detect a fault.

Upgrading your consumer unit is typically a day's work. We replace the old board with a new dual-RCD or fully populated RCBO board, test every circuit on completion, and issue you with the Electrical Installation Certificate and Minor Works Certificate you need.

Insurance note: Many home insurers now ask whether your consumer unit has RCD protection. An old rewireable fuse board may affect your cover or your ability to make a claim. Upgrading removes this risk.

How Much Does a Consumer
Unit Upgrade Cost?

The cost depends on the number of circuits in your property and whether any additional work is needed — for example, if the existing wiring needs updating before a new board can be fitted safely.

As a guide, most 3-bedroom homes require a board change that takes one day. Larger properties with more circuits will take longer. We'll give you a fixed price after a quick assessment — there are no call-out fees for coming out to look at the job.
